Some Online Casino Supporters
A pretty big battle is underway in Australia right now as several key members of
the Australian parliament are attempting to railroad in new regulations that
will make online casino gambling illegal within the country and put filtering
blocks in place to stop offshore companies from accessing Aussie gamblers. On
the flip side of the argument are many though, and they are adamantly supporting
a fully legalized and regulated Aussie gambling industry as a way to better
protect the market, as well as to stimulate new jobs and tax revenues. The
online casinos are currently already operating within the market, but threats of
new government action could put content censorship policies in place as a way to
prevent Aussie internet gambling.
The policies are stalled right now because of the big stand-off. The new
legislation that will block online casinos has a few key supporters. Nick
Xenophon has really pushed his agenda in parliament and feels strongly for the
blocking of all forms of internet gambling in the country. He claims that
legalization of the market will only lead to increased rates of underage and
problem gambling in the country. The counter argument however is solid. Research
shows that controlled and precise gaming laws in the county would provide more
safeguards and ensure that online casino sites were acting ethically.
Additionally, the benefits to the Aussie economy are numerous – legalized online
casino gambling would create many more jobs within varying sectors of the
market, not just internet gambling. There would be opportunities for media and
marketing jobs, in addition to oversight committees. Then there’s the tax
revenue that the government could use to fund other needed programs. |
