Reworded Online Casino Bill
Poker players in Massachusetts are breathing a bit easier this week as the
government has amended a piece of highly controversial legislation that would
have made both the online casinos and internet poker illegal within the state –
and a felony offence at that. The new bill that has been heating up the
international media looked to classify all internet based games as illegal and
punishable by a huge fine and possible prison time. International outcry from
the poker gambling community in particular has forced the legislators to amend
the current proposal to exclude internet poker from these harsh penalties. The
bad news is that the online casino industry is still targeted by the
controversial clause within the new bill.
The bill is specifically designed to license new land casinos within the state
and provide a framework for expansions in the Massachusetts State land gambling
industry. But because the state is really looking to protect potential land
gambling interests, several key politicians have made it a point to ban the
online casinos though and go down a line of legislation akin to the highly
criticized and draconian legislation Washington State. The Poker Players
Alliance though was pleased that the politicians agreed to alter the
controversial clause to specifically free online poker sites from the
restrictions.
The debate still wages on, however, and the online casino gambling industry is
pushing for complete eradication of this controversial clause within the bill.
At this point it is an unnecessary condition to passing wider land gambling
legislation that is the entire purpose of the bill, so there is a slim hope. |
