Bill Review May Never Come
Congressman Barney Frank has been waiting for years now for a US Congressional
hearing over his much supported bill that would neutralize the power of the
controversial UIGEA and instead legalize regulate online casinos in the US
market. The bill is intended to solve some of the major key issues that crop up
in the US as a result of the poorly written UIGEA. Unfortunately though, Frank’s
bill has some detractors and there has been a whole lot of action to keep
Frank’s counter legislation out of any Congressional hearings; the longer it can
be postponed, the more likelihood that the enforcement regulations for the UIGEA
will take effect.
There was a ray of hope last week that a Congressional hearing for Frank’s two
bills – the one to regulate online casinos in the US (HR 2267) and one that will
stop any UIGEA enforcement regulations from taking effect (HR 2266) – was going
to occur. Then scheduling issues got in the way and the hearing was cancelled
and postponed without another set day – a real bummer to the online casino
companies and industry insiders who were really eager to see this bill come to
fruition.
Once Congressional hearings do actually happen for the online casino gambling
legislation, there are many who assume that it will be the first big step toward
approval. The biggest obstacle has definitely been that the bills cannot even
get the time of day in Congress, once they do though, the need for a regulated
internet gambling industry is fairly obvious. |
