Protecting Against Online Casino Legislation
Tribal gambling laws in the United States are changing rapidly as individual
state governments all over the country look at the online casinos as a threat to
their income from land based gambling. Florida is one of the key US states that
has been considering the legalization of forms of internet gambling,
specifically poker, and perhaps forms of online casino gambling. The US tribes
though have to consider their own incomes since the federal tribal gaming laws
in the United States are in place to provide the tribes with a way to bring in
identifiable revenue. The Seminole Tribe in Florida has just inked a
revolutionary deal with the state government – if tribal gaming revenues drop as
a result of legalized online gaming then the tribes to do not have to pay any
taxes to the state.
The new compact between the Seminole Tribe and the State of Florida mandates
that the tribes pay a certain percentage of their revenue to the state
government. This has been in place though for ages, essentially as soon as there
were tribal casinos in the state. Now that the format of gambling is changing,
however, the tribes are protecting their interests by agreeing to a clause in
the compact that outlines that if tribal gaming income drops once online casinos
are legal, all of the guaranteed payments that the Seminole Tribe makes to the
state are void.
This clause is an integral part to how the tribes plan to maintain relevancy in
the US land and online casino gambling industry. Tribes all over the US have
debated on whether to support legalized US gambling, and the Seminole Tribe is
on the right track by protecting interests now, before the new internet poker
regulations pass in the state. |
