Prison Time for Online Casinos
The State of Massachusetts is making a very controversial move this month – or
at least attempting to make a controversial move. The State’s Speaker of the
House, Robert DeLeo, is currently attempting to rapidly push through a new piece
of legislation that would make online casino gambling illegal in the state, but
not only illegal, it would give the State of Massachusetts the right to imprison
Massachusetts citizens who break the law and gamble at offshore gaming sites.
The draconian legislation is just one piece of a new gaming proposal – and a
piece that was hidden deep within one of the clauses in the hopes that it will
pass without much notice, and then give the state incredible power over the
online casinos and gamblers themselves.
The gaming proposal is meant to bring a much larger land gambling industry to
the state, but then complete block and an all abilities for the state citizens
to access the online casinos. Because the internet gambling bans are the most
controversial part of the legislation, DeLeo is fast-tracking the proposal and
glossing over the provision that will give illegal online casino gamblers a
sentence of two years in prison for accessing the sites. That sentence is
incredibly draconian and harsh considering the times, and voters are now
appalled that such a clause is even in the land gambling proposal.
Online casino and internet poker interest groups are rapidly spreading the word
about the effect that the new land gambling proposal would have on Massachusetts
residents who use the offshore gaming sites. There is no telling yet if DeLeo is
going to get his demand met- which is for an immediate legislative vote on the
bill in the hopes of passing it before the interest groups stir up too much
controversy. |
