Should Online Casinos Enter Politics?
The topic might not be quite as controversial as keeping the separation of
church and state, but there are some concerns lately about the fact that the UK
online casino gambling industry has decided to get involved in the UK political
scene leading up the pending elections. The major elections have captivated the
attention of the country as Prime Minister Gordon Brown faces off as the
incumbent against David Cameron. These are the two primary forces right now and
Ladbrokes has decided to wade into the fray by showcasing the company’s opinion
on how UK citizens should vote in the upcoming elections. UK online casinos and
internet gambling companies were given a lot of rights to advertise in the UK
market several years ago and Ladbrokes is now using that right to showcase a set
of adverts that use look alike politicians to express the company’s displeasure
with the current administration.
Now it really begs the question though, should the online casinos be getting
themselves involved in the situation? Or should there be a level of separation –
the internet gambling companies can promote their own interests, but stay out of
politics? The second option does not leave a lot to freedom of speech, and yet
there are some supporters who believe that the online casino sites should steer
clear of politics and keep all of those gambling millions very much out of the
political race. On the flip side, Ladbrokes is merely expressing an opinion, and
the adds are actually quite tactful, if not blatantly to the point.
Basically, there is no way to keep the online casinos from placing these adverts
as long as the adverts still stay within the guidelines that the Advertising
Standards Authority outlines. And since there are no clear rules for politics
and internet gambling companies, plan on seeing several more of Ladbrokes’
humorous political adverts. |
