Points for the Online Casinos
The French land gambling industry was playing dirty recently by taking several
online casino gambling groups to court for illegally competing in the French
market. What’s so ridiculous about the case is the fact that France is currently
in the process of passing new licensing regulations that will make licensed
online casinos wholly legal in the market. The French land gambling interests
though were keen on keeping their gambling monopoly in place for as long as
possible – even if that meant launching a frivolous lawsuit against some very
major internet gambling groups.
The thrust of the court action was between three French land gambling groups and
pitted these French companies against the international gambling giants of 888,
Bwin, Sportingbet, and even Unibet. Each of these four online casinos were
accused of offering illegal competition within the French gambling market.
France’s existing gambling laws have created a state monopoly whereby gambling
groups only France’s four main land groups had the right to access the French
gambling population. Pressure from the European Commission and the rest of
Europe though has forced France to draft and pass new regulations that welcome
licensed online casinos into the market.
The French regulations are in the final stages of approval and the action from
the French monopolies is just a little bit ridiculous. The four French land
gambling groups involved, Tranchant, Joagroupe, Casinos de France, and Barrière
asked the court for punitive action against the online casinos active in the
French market by banning these four companies from obtaining French licensing
for at least two full years. The French courts have dropped the case and the
gambling groups continue to operate. |
