Greece May Legalize Online Casino
The Greek market is one of the more controversial European markets right now.
The European Commission has consistently sent letters of warning and requests
that the Greek government stop operating a monopoly and give outside online
casinos and betting companies a fair shot at competing in the market. That has
failed to happen however, and the Greek government continues to assert its right
to run OPAP, a state-run gambling and betting company that is the only company
in Greece that can legally accept land and internet bets. OPAP has recently
experienced some setbacks related to revenues and is petitioning the Greek
government to fully legalize online casino betting in the country as a way to
diversify the monopoly’s interests.
The government is currently consider what it would take to legally allow only
OPAP to operate online casino betting in the country, and they are considering
if this is a form of gambling that they want to actually allow inside of Greece.
Online casinos and internet gambling sites have a really bad rap in many
countries because of a false presumption that they are more dangerous than land
gambling in terms of addiction and underage gamblers.
There is every likelihood that the Greek government will legalize the online
casino betting side of OPAP however, because the government feels like it has a
whole lot of market control considering that OPAP is the only legal choice. If
OPAP launches into the internet betting business, there are likely going to be a
handful of very irate foreign internet betting companies pushing the European
Commission for swifter action. |
