Flirting with Online Casino Legislation
The South African government must have a sense of humor that the rest of us just
don’t get – it has now long promised new online casino gambling regulations in
the country that would better control and license the gaming sites, but those
new regulations have just never materialized. The government has spent years now
issuing investigations and research studies about the effect of the online
casinos and the impact a legalized industry would have on South Africa. The
research is pretty conclusive that South African gamblers would be best served
by a fully licensed and control market, and the government agreed to develop
these needed regulations and begin licensing gambling sties shortly.
The regulations have never fully materialized over the past several years
however, and now the Gambling Review Commission is holding several public
hearings on the situation to better gauge what the South African public is
looking for – perhaps legalized online casinos? The South African government
already has a framework outlined in drafted regulations for the proposed
licensing structure, and the public hearings are a way to better allow the
public a say in how the new regulations are implemented in the country. It’s
also a way to further stall implementation of online casino regs.
The online casino gambling industry has begun to demand these new regulations
alongside the South Africans themselves, and there is a big push to get this
situation sorted out rapidly. The accompanying regulations have been stalled by
the Minister of Trade and Industry and there is a hope that more pressure will
encourage a faster passage. |
