Filtering Out the Bad
The word filter has become a bit of a dirty word in the online casino gambling
industry right now because of the two key countries that are trying to use an
argument for national filtering as a way to block internet gambling. Filtering
content out at the government and ISP level is highly controversial in the
market right now because it is an activity that seriously limits freedom from
censorship laws that exist in most developing countries. But there is another
type of content filtering that still involves the online casinos but is
completely acceptable within the market – and that is web filters for children.
The ever growing concern that online casinos tempt underage children to gamble
has meant that content filtering software for households with children is
becoming increasingly popular. The online casino companies are even encouraging
the widespread use of new technologies that will protect the vulnerable from
internet gambling. Tibboh ISP has now announced a filtering process at the ISP
level that will classify billions of web pages from around the world and then
allow parents to mark mobile phones and computers at home with age level
restrictions.
The process is intended to protect underage kids from other dangers outside of
the online casino gambling industry as well – filtered content will include
certain MySpace pages and other inappropriate forms of social networking. All
told, the Tibboh filtering software is not revolutionary – this has been done
and attempted before on smaller scales, but this is the first time that such a
user-friendly application has been implemented in the huge UK online gambling
market. |
