US Criticizes Aussies
The question of internet freedoms and censorship has proven itself to be a
highly controversial topic in the 21st century. Because the internet medium is
so new, countries all over the world are trudging a new path in just how to deal
with such an invasive internet medium. Australians politicians though have taken
the issue of the online casinos and turned it into a reason to practice internet
censorship and severely limit the freedoms that Aussie internet users will have
when online. The United States Ambassador to Australia is now making headlines
after some incredibly critical headlines have made the national news. The US’s
Aussie Ambassador is certainly not the first to make some hugely critical
remarks about Senator Nick Xenophon’s efforts to block online casinos and other
questionable sites through the ISPs (internet service providers).
In fact, the US Ambassador has to join the queue of companies and individuals
that are fighting back against Australia’s plan to censor all of the online
casinos out of the market, along with child pornography and any other content
that the government deems inappropriate for Aussies. Some of the key outspoken
groups so far, that have hotly criticized Australia’s content censorship plans
include: Reporters Without Borders, Save the Children, Google, Yahoo, and a host
of other high profile companies and names.
The thing is, the online casinos are being made as the scapegoat for the
government’s want for more control. Once these content filters get put in place
it’s a slippery slope of morality to decide which sites the government bans and
which are able to slip through the ISP censors. There is a very real fear that
the Aussie government could then abuse the power in the long run, using internet
gambling as an initial reason to put these ISP blocks in place. |
