Online Casinos Criminal Again
The United States might just be ground zero in the global fight to give online
casinos and internet poker a fair understanding and equal weighting with the
land gambling companies. Not only has the US government put outrageous policies
in place aimed at stopping all US internet gambling activity through blocking
transactions with the offshore gaming sites, but now, individual states are
taking up the issue on their own. The overwhelming trend in a handful of US
states has been toward intrastate online casino gambling regulation as a way to
really bring in solid revenue to the state coffers. Massachusetts though is
singing a different tune; despite objection from some politicians and poker
gamblers in the state, Massachusetts is on a path toward making internet poker a
felony offense in the state.
If this new legislation passes, Massachusetts will certainly not be the first US
state to pass this ridiculous law. In fact, Washington State currently has a
similar policy in place, where being caught gambling at the online casinos and
poker sites is a Class C Felony offense, one right up there with child
pornography. The real kicker in the Massachusetts situation is the fact that the
state is specifically interested in expanding the gambling industry…but only the
land based industry, online casinos and internet poker will have specific
legislation drafted and passed that make the activity expressly illegal within
the state.
This move seems quite a bit hypocritical to many within the gambling industry
and the lobby groups and online casino interest groups are beginning their own
campaigns to counter what Massachusetts politicians are currently attempting to
pass into law. The PPA (Poker Players Alliance) is voicing concerns,
particularly over the fact that the politicians plan to hold no further hearings
or debate on the topic. |
