Decision Controversial

The National Indian Gaming Association has come to a consensus for the whole of the US Indian tribal gaming industry, and some of the tribes are not pleased with the outcome of the vote. For months now the Indian tribes have been very torn about whether or not to support Barney Frank’s legislation that will legalize the online casinos should it pass through into law. Several tribes, the Morongo Band of California Mission Indians for one, have adamantly asserted that the legalization of online casino sites in the US will make land gambling venues, particularly those on reservations, obsolete. The Association though does not seem to really agree with that assessment however and the Association voted in overwhelming majority to not oppose Barney Frank’s alternative internet gambling legislation.

The key argument that likely swayed the Association in favor of allowing US online casinos to become legalized is the fact that internet gambling will be a real boon to tribes in areas that have low revenues right now. It’s also a way for every single tribe with legalized gaming to then expand their offerings and their line of hospitality. The tribes pondering studying the issue more, and specifically analyzing the impact that US online casino sites would have on tribes, but the eventual conclusion was that if the tribes work with the government toward legalized gambling they will likely have a fairer shot at favorable Indian online gaming legislation when it comes time to regulate the industry.

Although there are still some tribes sitting on the fence, the Association voted 27-6 and just one abstention in favor of not opposing Barney Frank’s online casino gambling bill that looks to fully regulate and license a US internet gambling industry.
