Aussie Company Angered
VenueNet has announced that Australian government unfairly confiscated the
company’s property under charges that VenueNet was operating an online casino
operation. The company, however, merely provides kiosks in public locations,
hotels and pubs, that can access the internet – just like millions of computer
kiosk terminals used all over Australia. VenueNet now finds itself in a legal
battle witht eh Victorian Commission for Gambling Regulation after TabCorp,
Australia’s key legal land betting option, reported to the Victorian officials
that VenueNet’s machine in the Rising Sun Hotel in Melbourne, Australia was
operating as an online casino machine and not merely an internet point.
The Victorian authorities responded to the complaint by confiscating the
computer terminal. VenueNet has not been deterred however, and has demanded back
its gaming machine, noting that the company has plans to install 200 more of
these internet kiosks all over Australia. VenueNet asserts that the machine is
in no way any more of an online casino portal than any computer linked to the
internet. Yes, VenueNet’s computers can access sportsbetting sites, but that
feature is not advertised and is merely a result of VenueNet allowing the
computer to access the internet!
The company is livid and the Victorian government is going to have to make a
tough call on this situation right now. Although online casinos are illegal in
the country, the mere fact that some gamblers are using VenueNet as a source to
get to the betting sites may not be proper justification for confiscating the
internet kiosk in question. |
