Oz Adamantly Blocking Online Casinos
Australia has been taking a lot of criticism as of late because of the country’s
plan to block online casinos and questionable internet content through ISP
filters. Interest groups all over the world have lashed out at Australia’s plan
and highly criticized the planned list of filtered sites. As the controversy
continues to boil, and Stephen Conroy continues to implement his content
filtering plan, global search giant Google has stepped into the fray with
criticisms for the country related to where these bans and blocks are heading
for the country. Conroy was not a fan of what Google had to say about the online
casino and porn blocks and Conroy has actually stepped out into the media and
taken his own stance on the situation.
Conroy actually took his pot shots to a whole new level by complete going
off-topic. The internet censorship in the country is about the online casinos
and other questionable industries. Google took the debate to the level of
personal freedoms, and then Conroy decided to side-step the actual criticisms of
his planned censorship and instead attack Google’s latest offering, Google Buzz
– a product that has sparked privacy concerns and debates. In response to
Conroy, Google merely refuted with a request that Conroy stay on topic – and
that topic is internet filtering no matter what the justification, be it online
casino sites or porn.
A major blow to Conroy’s plans has been the opposition from US President Barack
Obama. Obama hasn’t been outright critical (after all, the US is blocking online
casinos as well) but he did note that the plans to filter and censor internet
content causes concern. |
