US Action Against Full Tilt
The United States Department of Justice (DoJ) has formally announced an
investigation against the one of the largest online casino poker gambling sites
in the world. Full Tilt Poker is the second largest international poker room
serving the global poker industry (PokerStars being the largest) and the company
has continually made the controversial decision over the past several years to
continue offering internet poker services to US players. The US DoJ has never
yet delineated a difference between the online casinos and the internet poker
industry, but according to the Financial Times recently, a Grand Jury in New
York City will decide precisely that line – whether or not Full Tilt has crossed
any lines and broken the laws within the controversial UIGEA.
The Grand Jury has a pretty hefty task ahead – the determine whether or not the
ambiguous description of “illegal internet gambling” within the UIGEA pertains
to the internet poker industry, or rather only applies to the online casinos.
Full Tilt, along with all of the major poker rooms have long asserted their
distinction from pure chance gambling because of the skill aspect inherent in
the game of poker. The rest of the world is still torn on the subject, however,
and the Grand Jury will have a lot of power in their ruling.
Lawyers for the two owners and founders of Full Tilt have declined to fully
comment on the situation, noting that they were not yet aware that such an
investigation was underway. Poker holds such a unique spot in the online casino
gambling industry that it’s interesting that the US DoJ has decided that now was
the appropriate time to take on such a confusing issue. |
