Online Casinos in Legal Vacuum
The European Union has a big issue on its hands these days with the continued
European gambling monopolies that are operating in the market and violating the
free trade principles that are inherent within the European Union. The
monopolies exist within nearly as dozen EU countries and they block other EU
online casino gambling companies from accessing their gambling markets. This
trend has been an ongoing and huge issue for the EU for several years now and
there have been very few positive advancements in the market. The most current
situation causing concern involves the European Court of Justice ruling that
Portugal has the right to block online casinos if the block is in place as a
protection for the Portuguese against fraud and crime.
This ruling came as a bit of a shock to a lot of the online casino gambling
industry. The assumption has long been that the ECoJ would uphold the European
Commission’s position that that all forms of monopolies and blocks violate the
EU trade policies between EU member states. Basically, major European brands
such as Bwin are huge in the international online casino and internet betting
markets and this company has a keen interest in legally entering nearly all of
the currently closed and monopolized EU markets.
Norbert Teuflberger, one of the CEO’s at Bwin has noted that this ruling and the
currently situation regarding the online casinos is unique and tricky. He
comments, “The rapid pace of technological development has created a “legal
vacuum” for Internet gaming.” The internet gambling market has ever-changing
regulations and the international market is truly huge and changing – with all
of this in mind there is every reason to believe that although Portugal’s
policies were supported by the ECoJ, this is not the last that the nation will
hear from the foreign online gambling companies. |
