WAAG: United States: Federal Government
The United States online casino gambling market has been highly controversial
for several years now, ever since the UIGEA passed into law and has banned and
blocked foreign competition from the market. The UIGEA is a federal piece of
legislation that targets the financial transactions between offshore online
casinos and US gamblers. The passage of the UIGEA was highly controversial and
the government has caught a lot of flack over this because of breaching of
international trade agreements. At this stage of the game the government is in
the process of really doing an in depth study of the online gaming market and
reassessing the effectiveness of attempting to enforce the UIGEA.
Additionally, there is not a ton of support for the UIGEA in actuality. The
passage of the legislation was highly controversial because it was a midnight
addition to a must-pass bill and a majority of the members of Congress had no
idea even the details of the UIGEA. Now that the UIGEA has come into full
effect, however, several key politicians are banning together to create
awareness about the online casino gambling industry and controversial
legislation and these members of Congress are also attempting to gain support
for new bills that would neutralize the UIGEA and instead legislation and
regulate the industry.
On the federal level this line of thinking just makes more sense. The US
government has already demonstrated that it is unable to effectively enforce the
UIGEA and block offshore online casinos because of the pervasive nature of the
internet. Regulation and licensing would not only provide more safety for US
gamblers, but would also give the Federal government a new industry to tax and
then reap the revenue from over the long term. |
