The South African government has spent more than a year now considering, pondering, and developing new regulations for the South African online casino gambling industry that has been inevitable within the market. The National Gambling Board of South Africa though has encountered a few setbacks over the past year in attempts to effectively balance the need for control of the internet gambling industry with the inability of any nation to truly stop internet gambling from seeping across its virtual borders. To that end though, the NGB of South Africa has decided to learn by example and the NGB traveled to the small island nation of Antigua and Barbuda last week in an effort to learn more about the regulation structure on the island as well as form stronger ties with the regulatory jurisdiction.

The new South African online casino gambling regulations are still in development but once they are released and implemented the NGB of South Africa will actually have to partially rely on the safety regulations and precautions in licensing jurisdictions to control and protect the industry. In that way, although the NGB will oversee and control the regulations within SA, the vast majority of the online casinos will be licensed offshore and then licensed to operate in SA.

In mid-August Antigua hosted the South African representatives and the two countries engaged in discussion and a lot of interactions so that the NGB could better understand the regulatory process at work in Antigua. The fact that the NGB of South Africa chose Antigua adds strengths to that small island nation’s attempts to expand within the international gaming market. The meeting also underscores the fact that no nation can operate the internet gambling industry in isolation – regulations have an international effect and the countries are all in this together as they attempt to control the growing market.
