Land Bingo Can't Tough It
The land bingo industry in the United Kingdom has faced some very tough times
this past year because of the economic recession and the changing legislation in
the UK that has blocked smoking in bingo parlours and bars, pubs, etc. This
legislation had a huge affect on the appeal of the bingo halls to the gamblers –
they were not appreciative of the restriction and, as such, many bingo gamers
have turned to the online casinos and the internet bingo sites. There is a
marked surge in the viability of the online casino bingo sites that really
parallels the decline in the land bingo industry, and alarming trend that has
not really been addressed by the UK government.
The land bingo gambling venues have petitioned the government to readdress the
gambling legislation that places a double taxation on land gambling companies –
a tax that the online casinos and internet venues do not have to pay. Because
the internet gambling companies can operate out of remote licensing
jurisdictions they are at a huge competitive advantage over the land bingo halls
that have no choice but to pay land gambling taxes in addition to general
gambling taxes.
The business for the UK’s previously 675 land based bingo operators has just
gotten too tough; the online casinos are highly competitive and 34 land bingo
clubs have already been forced to close their door this year alone. The trend
has been going for some time and it is quite alarming to witness these close and
fold because of harsh and excessive UK tax policies. |
