Temporary Hold
The Morongo Band of Mission Indians for months now has been aggressively and
actively pursuing the legalization of online casino poker gambling in
California. Those efforts have been echoed at the political level as there are
several key politicians vying for new regulations in the state that would
control offshore and foreign internet poker gambling and harness the industry so
that the State of California is able to take a piece of the revenues being
generate by this industry. The Morongo Tribe has actively pursued this issue
with the hopes of then being one of the state companies able to launch online
casino poker within the state.
In that regard, the online casinos themselves are strictly taboo in the United
States because of Federal level legislation, the UIGEA. But there is a strong
argument at hand that the internet poker industry is exempt from the constraints
of the UIGEA if it is practiced within state borders and only the game of
internet poker.
In a surprising move this week though, the Morongo Tribe announced that they
were stopping their efforts to legalize internet poker in the state, at least
for now. That being said, the Tribe does plant to step back into the game in
January once again – and to that end, the Tribe will actually double efforts and
really push for change in California in regards to the online casino poker
gambling industry. Many politicians in the State of California plan to also push
really strongly for the legalization of internet poker at the start of the new
year. |
