Targeting the Young
The online casino software development companies walk a fine line with the
development of their licensed and branded gaming content because there is
certainly a point where some of the most successful adult brands also appeal to
children and youth. The internet gambling industry in Europe and the UK is under
strict watch from the licensing authorities and the Gambling Commissions to
operate in a socially responsible manner that protect problem and underage
gamblers from exploitation. But where is the line drawn when Spiderman and X-Men
themed games are released into the online casinos for adults but they are games
that so obviously also appeal to youth.
Underage gambling is a very real problem facing the online casinos and a chief
argument against the internet gambling industry. Although the rates of underage
gambling are very low because of internet technology and software that is able
to identify and block underage gamblers, any underage gambling problem is enough
to stir problems. The thing is, the licensed and branded gaming content is some
of the most successful at the online casinos and they are not likely to give
this up. That’s where the fine line comes in – the internet gambling companies
are not promoting their brands and products irresponsibly and are certainly not
targeting youth in their advertising campaigns.
It really all comes down to the fact that although some content at the online
casinos will also appeal to youth and underage gamblers, the gaming companies
are cautious and aware that they have to ensure that their campaigns and games
do not overly appeal to underage gamblers. And it’s not like the software
developers are seeking out “Dora the Explorer” licensing, all of the brands are
adult themes that may also appeal subsequently appeal to youth. |
