Political Support
The California poker gambling industry is faltering these days in efforts to
legalize internet poker gambling within the state. Online casino gambling is
illegal in the United States as a result of the UIGEA but there are carve-outs
in place that some argue leave an opening for intrastate internet poker. Poker
is argued to be a skill based game and for that reason many argue that the UIGEA
is wholly unaplicable to the online casino poker gambling industry. That is up
for debate, but the California state politicians do believe that even if the
UIGEA applies to internet poker, that intrastate gambling is within the
specifications of the federal legislation. The Californian politicians are
spearheading this latest attempt to legalize poker in the state in large part
because of the possible revenue streams.
The United States is slowly coming out of the recession according to some
analysts but that does not mean that all is rosy in the individual state
governments. New revenue streams are the key to refunding failing state budgets.
Online casinos are out of the question but internet poker is a very viable and
lucrative alternative that has a large possible market base. There is still some
objection within the state –there certainly is not unanimous support for the
online poker attempts and there is a good deal of debate taking place between
the support and the opposition.
A key opposition in the state of California is coming from the Indian tribes in
the state. These tribes have access to the lucrative land casino gambling
industry and many of the tribes are torn about whether this push toward internet
poker is positive. Other politicians question the legality of the laws in
accordance with federal legislation that is in place right now. All of these
kinks are still in the process of being worked out. |
