Still a Kentucky Problem
The United States has a very real problem with the regulation of the online
casino gambling industry. The US currently still has federal legislation in
place that blocks and bans the internet gambling companies from accessing the US
market. In addition to the federal level legislation in place, the Kentucky
State government is still in the spotlight for its questionable moves against
the international gambling industry. The Kentucky government made international
headlines with attempts to seize the domain names of some of the biggest online
casinos in the world because those gambling sites offered internet gambling to
Kentucky gamblers.
Here’s the stunning part of the whole situation – the Kentucky courts have
actually upheld the seizure requests at times. This case has gone from the
lowest of Kentucky courts in a simple battle between the State and the
representatives for the online casinos, to a case that will now be heard before
the Kentucky Supreme Court. Although the first court found the case mostly in
favor of the state government’s request that online casino sites either leave
the Kentucky market or face domain name seizure. That verdict was then appealed
to the higher courts and then appealed again to the Supreme Court.
The Kentucky State governor, Steve Beshear, is really pushing the issue far
beyond where most in the online casino gambling industry assumed that this would
end. The Supreme Court in the state has agreed to hear the state’s appeal and a
court date of October 22, 2009 has been set. There is a hop that at this point
in time the SC will side with the rights of the online gambling industry and put
an end to the ongoing ridiculous. |
