It's Here and Staying
The online casino gambling industry was delivered a big wake up call this month
by the US courts as a Philadelphia Appeals Court ruled that the UIGEA is
constitutional. The UIGEA is a highly controversial piece of legislation that
has been in place in the US for about three years now. Over the past three years
there has been a lot of debate and outcry over the act, but yet very few changes
and only a modicum of progress. Some online casinos and industry supporters have
really begun to place their hopes on Barney Franks legislation that is making
its way through Congress right now, but in reality, the Appeals Court ruling
should really just serve as a big reality check for those in the industry that
have been banking on some US changes by the end of the year.
The UIGEA could be in place for several years yet before the international
courts and the foreign countries demand a change in the online casino gambling
policies. The economic recession has taken the focus off of the US internet
gambling industry to an extent. Though the EU has taken up official issue with
the UIGEA and the US’s enforcement of this federal policy, there has been little
strong action on either side as both the EU and the US attempt to stabilize
their economy and address the big picture concerns.
With the ruling that the UIGEA is constitutional, the individual US states now
have the right to implement their own online casino gambling policies and the US
banking institutions and financial services sectors are tasked with effectively
putting an end to internet gambling within the United States – no small task
actually. |
