The Battle Stateside
All of the industry media seems focused on the development of the online casino
gambling industry in the United States as well as some of the setbacks that are
occurring in the market right in this moment. One of the growing concerns in the
US is the state-level anti-gambling action that is cropping up in states like
Maryland. Washington State has long been an opponent of the online casinos and
internet gambling industry and has some draconian policies in place. But for the
state of Maryland, these actions against the gambling industry are very fresh
and have only been escalating for the past six months or so. Prior to this year,
Maryland seemed unlikely to go down this road of aggressive action against the
in-state gamblers.
This month the efforts have doubled yet again and the US Attorney’s Office
running out of Baltimore, Maryland is investigating and pursuing more online
casino gambling related cases than ever before. The government at this point is
really looking to stop the state gamblers from accessing the online casinos and
poker sites through diversion. If the state is going to confiscate account funds
and force the forfeiture of gambling winnings then what is the point of even
gambling? That’s a line of thought and reasoning that the government can
support.
The government justifies these new actions against the online casino gambling
industry because they are funnelling a large portion of the seized and forfeited
funds into programs and services to help problem and compulsive gamblers. Since
internet gambling is legal in the state these actions are within the scope of
legality although the gamblers and the industry are not pleased by the new
policies. |
