WAAG: South Africa: Overview
The South African online casino gambling market has really been a state of flux
over the past more than a year now because of planned regulatory changes out of
the South African government. South Africa has a potentially decent sized market
in place that is readily waiting to accept the online casinos into the market
place. The government though has been hesitant to legalize internet gambling for
several reasons that include fears of increased problem and addictive gambling
rates. Internet gambling is actually prevalent in the current market right now
because the bans that are in place are largely ineffective at actually keeping
the South Africans from accessing internet casinos that are illegally operating
in the South African market.
The government has requested that the online casino gambling companies respect
the bans and blocks that are currently in place and stay out of the South
African market until new legislation can be put in place. That is not entirely
effective and some more unscrupulous companies have ruined their chances of ever
legally obtaining a South African license by accessing this market while the
regulations are in development.
In addition to the potential within the online casino gambling industry there is
land betting and other forms of gambling that take place both within the law and
outside of the government’s regulations.
