WAAG: South Africa: Government
South Africa has been in the process of developing and implementing new online
casino gambling regulations and legislation for well over a year now. There was
a lot of excitement recently when it looked like the South African government
was nearing completion on the drafting of the regulations. That excitement
though has worn off more recently as the government is now considering an
about-face on the legislation of internet gambling among renewed fears that a
fully regulated and government-supported online casino gambling industry will
increase the rates of problem gambling in the country to unhealthy levels.
When the online casino gambling issue first started to really become a problem
in South Africa a couple of years ago the government vehemently noted that it
would not be passing supportive regulations for this industry. One anti-gambling
politician went so far as to compare regulating online casinos akin to the
government supporting and profiting from prostitution. These are a far cry apart
from one another in the eyes of the vast majority of the world, but many South
African politicians view the internet gambling industry as a real plague on the
nation.
Those sentiments, though strong, have not been the majority though over the past
year and the South African government looked to the failing US regulations as
indication that blocking and banning the online casinos is not an effective way
to handle the industry. The pervasive nature of the gambling industry has caused
the government to seriously consider strict regulation as the only effective way
to protect South African internet gamblers from the dangers of the black-market
underground side of the industry. |
