Professional Poker Called Into Question
A professional online casino gambler in Denmark has encountered some very real
problems this month as the Danish courts ruled that he had to forfeit over the
funds that he won while making a living as a professional poker player in the
international poker industry. Denmark has some very controversial policies in
place that have caused the European Union to issue the Danish government
warnings about operating gambling monopolies and the specific discrimination
against foreign online casinos. The Danish poker player in question though
violated some very old poker laws in the country that specify that a Danish
citizen is not permitted to make a living from gambling.
The gambler in question does not play at the online casinos, but has actually
made 194,000 kroner this year from the internet poker industry. Even that amount
would be legal if the player in question had another job that was paying the
bills and the internet poker gambling was merely a hobby in addition to legal
employment in the country. The 35-year old gambler’s only means of support,
however, has been the internet poker industry and his winnings.
The Supreme Court in Denmark has ruled that this in violation of Danish law and
ordered the forfeiture of all of the online poker funds. The Danish courts have
toyed with this issue for some time now and there have been slightly conflicting
judgements on the internet casino and poker gambling laws and how they apply to
Danish citizens gambling from Denmark on foreign gambling sites. |
