Is It a Right or a Privilege?
New talks and speculation in the United Kingdom could spell out some drastic
changes for the online casino gambling and betting industries in the UK. The
internet betting market has really surged in popularity in the past several
years and now there is a growing trend for the major sports books to seek out
sponsorship deals of the major teams in various sporting industries. The fact
that the online betting companies are increasingly involved with the sporting
teams on a close level has recently raised a lot of concerns over the continued
preservation of integrity within the sporting industries. The online casinos and
sports books are now linked with individual teams and have a vested interest in
the success of said teams.
That means that match-fixing and corruption within the sport become an even
bigger concern now. Before the prevalence of online casinos sponsoring the
sporting teams there was enough distance between the betting companies and the
teams themselves. That distance is now gone and the UK Sports Minister, Gerry
Sutcliffe, has now opened up debate in the industry about whether offering bets
on the teams is a right or a privilege for the sports books.
Sutcliffe is considering forcing the land and online casino bookmakers to pay a
fee for the right to offer bets on the sporting teams and events. That fee would
then be used to further police the industry and thoroughly follow up on any
reports of suspicious betting patterns. There is no indication that this is
actually going to happen, but Sutcliffe has put the discussion on the table for
debate so it is surely a definite possibility. |
