A Positive for Online Casinos
The US internet gambling industry is pretty much nil at this point and there is
only a little bit of hope that the federal government will change the highly
controversial UIGEA in the next session of Congress. But as much as there is
only a bit of hope for Barney Frank’s Congressional efforts for the online
casino gambling industry, the Sunshine State has appointed a pro-internet
gambling senator. Florida Senator Charlie Crist earned a bunch of new fans last
week with his announcement that George LeMieux has taken over Mel Martinez’s
position as Senate representative for the state of Florida. LeMieux is right in
the mix of the gambling issue in the US and he has really helped the state of
Florida move forward with more positive relationships with the tribes in the
state.
Although many online casino gambling supporters have really lost faith in the
effort to legalize and regulate internet gambling in the states, organizations
like the Poker Players Alliance and iMEGA have kept the morale high. To that
end, LeMieux’s entrance into the high level of government lends one more voice
to Barney Frank’s efforts to pass new legislation through the House for
approval. There is actually a lot of strength going into the next session of
Congress and Frank’s bill has an unprecedented level of support.
LeMieux strongly supports legalizing many forms of gambling as a way to increase
revenues. That line of thinking can only help the Frank and Menendez as they
really begin to campaign to effect change in the US online casino gambling
market. LeMieux also has the potential to really generate some more positive
change in Florida’s land gambling industry and possibly an emerging Florida
internet poker or betting industry. |
