Online Casinos Go Political: 1
The internet gambling issue in the United States is extremely polarized and has
the potential to really heat up in the coming weeks as the two major political
events are bringing the supporters and protestors out into the media spotlight.
The online casino gambling issue is making its way into the political race for
which politician will make the position of US Senator and succeed Edward
Kennedy. In addition to the race for Senator, the internet gambling bill is
making its way to Congress at some point this month now that Congress is back in
session. The online casinos are currently banned by the UIGEA and both of these
two events will weigh a great deal on the future of internet gambling in the
United States.
The race for US Senator has really thrust the online casino gambling issue back
into the spotlight because the person succeeding Kennedy as Senator will have a
vote and a voice when the new bills come up for discussion and voting. Some of
the candidates are clearly bad choices for supporters of the internet gambling
industry. The Massachusetts Attorney General, Martha Coakley, is entering the
race for Senator and she is actually strongly against the online casinos to the
point that she is even enforcing legislation in her state that doesn’t even
exist.
Coakley is a strong candidate and that is a bit worrisome for online casino
gambling supporters. She has a lot to say against internet gambling and her
voice on the floor of Congress would surely add to the anti-gambling debate.
There are several candidates vying for the Senate seat though and others provide
much more hope for the internet gambling industry. |
