Taking Online Casino Payments
The State of Maryland is making some very questionably legal decisions this
month with the seizure warrants for bank account funds in which internet
gambling sites are disbursing funds to Maryland gamblers. Internet gambling is
illegal in the state and the US magistrate judge in Maryland is willing to make
an example of the gamblers in question who are breaking the law by patronizing
the online casinos. This trend started over the summer with the warrant for
account fund seizures for accounts being held in California. The United States
has highly controversial online casino gambling regulations in place and the
State of Maryland’s actions are only more disconcerting for the internet
gambling industry and the gamblers themselves.
Internet gamblers in the United States haven’t really had to take the online
casino gambling bans very seriously because they UIGEA does not directly affect
them but rather the gambling sites and the payment processing companies. And to
that end, even when the payment processing companies were tapped by the US
Department of Justice with seizure warrants and the freezing of company assets,
gamblers traditionally still get paid for the money in their account.
The latest seizures though are really going to affect the internet gamblers
themselves as much as the online casinos because the Maryland officials are
looking to stop gambling at the individual level. There are only a few US states
that have specific legislation in place to prevent individuals themselves from
gambling through the internet and Maryland is not only one of those states, but
the state is one of the first to really step up and begin to enforce said
legislation. Only the State of Washington compares in prosecution and
enforcement efforts. |
