WAAG: Australia: Government
The Australian government has created a really unique and not altogether clear
policy regarding the online casino gambling industry. On one side, the
government definitely has legislation in place from 2001 that makes operating an
internet gambling site for the Australian market illegal. But the other side of
that legislation has the pastime of frequenting the online casinos legal for the
Aussies themselves. To top that off, the Australian government is not actively
enforcing the 2001 Interactive Gambling Act and that means that foreign internet
gambling companies have not taken the threats seriously.
The Australian government is a bit wishy-washy on the online casino gambling
industry and has not yet stood firm by any one decision. There is no doubting
that the internet gambling industry is accessing the Australian market and
willing accepting Aussie gamblers. This is because the government has yet to
enforce any threats. One extremely notable attempt by the Australian government
to control the online casinos was an attempt to include censorship at the ISP
level for all of Australia.
The word censorship though sparks a lot of controversy from gamblers and the
international community and the Australian government has been pushed back to
the drawing board on this issue. The government does not trust the online
casinos because of the pervasiveness of the industry and because regulation of
internet gambling is quite tricky. At this point the Aussie government is still
against internet gambling but has yet to come up with an effective way to keep
foreign gambling sites from accessing Aussie gamblers. |
