WAAG: Australia: Online Casinos
The Australian online casino gambling industry is a bit of a non point right now
because the industry is very small and not supported by the Australian
government. In fact, like the United States, the Australian government
previously passed legislation that banned the actual online casinos themselves
from operating in the market. In many ways the Australian Interactive Gambling
Act, passed in 2001 is quite similar to the approach that the US UIGEA took.
Internet gambling companies are not legally allowed to offer internet gambling
services to any Australian gambler. On a more lenient side though, the online
sports betting industry in Australia is not a part of the IGA and is therefore
fully legal in Australia right now.
The key part of the legislation that has made any sort of illegal online casino
gambling industry viable within the Australian market is the fact that Aussies
themselves do not face any form of punishment or criminal charge for accessing
the gambling sites and playing. The online casinos though makes it illegal for
internet gambling companies to actually offer the services. Interestingly
enough, although this legislation is very similar to the US’s controversial
UIGEA, there have been far fewer international protests.
A key reason for that could be the fact that the Australian government has not
actually begun to actively enforce the legislation. In large part, many online
casinos have respected the ban and contented themselves to the now open internet
betting industry. There are still a number of casino sites catering to Aussie
gamblers, but they are not the rule, but rather the exception at this point in
time. |
