WAAG: Australia: Betting Shops
The online casino gambling industry may not be very prominent in Australia right
now because of nation-wide restrictions on the industry, but these restrictions
have certainly not bled over into the internet betting industry. Bookies have
their hands full in all of the Australian states these days as international
sporting events grow even more popular than in years past and gamblers are still
enthusiastically betting on everything from football to horse racing and all of
the sports and activities in between. There is a good selection of land betting
operators entering the Australian market in the past year or so as the state
authorities are slowly beginning to open up to competition from foreign owned
and operated gambling companies. Some of the initial hesitancy was certainly
aimed at the companies that also operate online casino gambling services, but
proper and full licensing and regulation of the industry has stemmed some of
those concerned.
With the online casinos taken off the table of possibility the land betting
shops are still performing quite well. Like many countries, even the smallest of
towns and cities have their own TABCorp, Centrebet, Betfair or other betting
venue. Walking down the streets of any Australian city yields these betting
venues and there is likely always going to be a handful of other Aussies in the
betting shop checking the odds, making bets, and watching live events on the
flat-screen televisions.
There is a habitual and social element to the land betting industry that has
survived for decades and been preserved even in countries like the UK where the
online casino sports betting industry has found huge purchase and a large base
of users. |
