Opposition Mislead?
There is some vehement opposition coming out of the Native American community in
California lately as the government seriously considers attempts to legalize
intrastate online poker gambling. The United States federal government has
banned and blocked offshore online casinos from accessing the US market but
there is a line of thinking within several US states now that intrastate betting
and gambling is not covered by the UIGEA, particularly in skill based games such
as poker. And since there is such a huge potential market for online poker
gambling in California it really is a wonder that any of the tribes are in
opposition to the legislation that would legalize the game.
Here’s the thing. Although online poker gambling may very well take away some
revenue from the land casinos, all of the tribes will have the ability to launch
into the internet poker market. The internet is the era of the future and there
is no way to avoid it in the long run. Blocking the passage of this new
legislation will only briefly put a hold on the online casinos and poker sites
launching into the market. A tribe based near San Diego, the Viejas Band of
Mission Indians, are strongly opposed to a Californian internet poker network.
Here is the question: Why are they against getting a head start? Online casinos
and internet gambling are coming to the US and it is just a matter of time. The
new push toward Californian internet poker would give all of the tribes in the
state a head start on establishing a brand in the market. |
