WAAG: South Africa: Online Casinos
The South African market is considering regulating and licensing online casino
gambling sites as a way to not only bring in more revenue to the state coffers,
but in an attempt to make the market safer for South African gamblers. Over the
past decade there has been a bit of a free-for-all in the market as the
government only has loose prohibitions against the online casinos, but no
policies in place to actually prevent South African gamblers from accessing the
gambling sites. Now that the government is drafting new regulations that will
license gambling sites for the market there are only a handful of companies
still accessing the market.
The South African government has actually asked that the online casinos
voluntarily exit the market and stop allowing South African gamblers to access
the sites while the regulations are in development. The government plans to
license certain sites for the market and as such is relying on the scrupulous
companies to stay clear of the South African market until there are regulations
and a structure in place. As an added incentive to adhere to the government’s
requests, the online casino sites that chose to still cater to South Africans
will not obtain legal licenses to operate once the market is regulated.
This policy has actually worked to an extent – but only to an extent. The top
online casino gambling companies have exited the market to await regulation but
that has left a void that is now filled with unscrupulous gaming companies
preying on the South African gamblers who are not willing to wait the months and
years it will take for regulations to pass and take effect. |
