WAAG: Israel: Legal Gambling
There is not a whole lot of gambling that is legal in Israel right now –in fact,
the government has laid out very specific legislation that firmly blocks all
online casinos from legally accessing Israel gamblers and provides carve-outs
for operation of gambling in the country to only two key companies. A huge
target of the country’s Attorney General was the online casino gambling industry
specifically. And to that end, the Attorney General was interested in stopping
the activity from taking place with Israeli gamblers, there are other
dispensations in place for businesses offering foreign internet gambling.
As far as legal gambling in the country, the best bet for Israeli gamblers is to
really look at the laws before they attempt to place bets and gamble. In 2005
the Attorney General ordered that all online casino gambling operations cease in
the country and even included internet backgammon, a very popular game in
Israel, in the demand. The only two companies not affected by the ban were both
the Israeli Commission for Sports Gambling and the Israel Lottery. This firm ban
on the online casinos and all forms of internet gambling stayed in place for two
years until the Attorney General announced that a single internet backgammon
site was allowed back into the Israeli market.
Play65 is now the only legal online gambling site operating in Israel and the
company operates harmoniously with the Israeli government. The Attorney General
claimed that the decision to allow internet backgammon back into the market was
due to the “unique circumstances of the site activity.” Although the internet
backgammon site now has full access to the market the site must remain within
its niche and cannot offer internet casino gambling. |
