WAAG: India: Overview
The Indian online casino gambling industry is far from well developed and
certainly not a hugely tapped market by the international gambling companies.
One reason for this is because of the lack of high-speed broadband internet
connectivity throughout the country. India is still a very poor country and thus
one of the key components that is necessary for a strong internet gambling
industry is the prevalence of broadband level connections at home computers
throughout the country. That is not even close to happening in this developing
country and the vast majority of the major online casinos do not even focus
attention on the gambling industry here.
To that end though, gambling at online casinos is legal throughout most of the
country actually, it’s just that there are not a lot of people taking advantage
of the ability to gamble. Maharasthra is the one region of India that does not
permit online casino gambling in any form. The pastime is banned as a part of
the Bombay Wager Act that is still in place right now. Bombay, or Mumbai, is a
one of the largest cities in India and a major port of call for ships and other
industries and also a city of crisp and modern high rises and intense poverty
and slums.
The ban on online casinos and internet gambling is likely part of an effort to
fight criminal activities and corruption in the region. Gambling though is
actually growing in popularity throughout India and the national lottery,
betting, and land gambling establishments are all viable options for this
developing country.
