WAAG: Ireland: Government
Ireland has one of the least developed online casino gambling markets in Europe
right now because the Irish government has not yet acting on plans to develop
and expand the internet gambling industry to include internet gambling sites.
There is certainly gambling throughout the country, but betting and land
gambling are the primary types of gambling with internet betting expanding in
popularity. The government has the opportunity right now to launch a strong
effort into the international industry and the internet gambling sites all over
the world would definitely respond with enthusiasm. Only in the last couple of
months though has the Irish government indicated that it is considering changing
the current blocks and restrictions on the gambling industry that have been in
place since the 50’s.
One of the key reasons for the government’s decision to finally consider online
casinos as a viable industry for the Green Isle is because of the current
economic recession. The recession has meant job losses all over the developed
world and countries everywhere are looking for ways to boost their economies and
entice big businesses to open shop. Ireland is an attractive place for
headquarters and base operations for the internet gambling industry and the
government has a lot of pressure from the industry to readdress gambling laws.
What is the hesitancy though? The online casino gambling industry has been
interested in the Irish market for some time now and yet the government has
chosen to steadfastly support the enforcement of the archaic 1956 Gaming and
Lotteries Act. That could be changing though as the government assesses the
potential jobs and revenue that will be created by a regulated online gambling
market. |
