Gambling in Europe
The European countries that are currently operating internet gambling monopolies
got a bit of a break over the past month or so in terms of media attention
because there are so many changes taking place on the international level. The
European monopolies are a huge concern in the international gambling industry,
but they are also a bit of old news at this point. All of the industry knows to
watch for the industry to ensure that the European Commission is still make slow
progress on forcing the European countries to alter the progress. The key word
though is slow. It is taking an exceedingly long time for the European countries
to put an end to state monopolies. The current monopolies and blocks that are in
place are protectionist policies that are specifically in contravention of EU
policies that call for a free and open market place for goods and services.
The European Commission has really tried hard over the past several years to
force the European nations into an open and free online casino gambling market,
but that has yet to happen. Now, to be fair, the Commission did make some very
real progress with a couple of the more than a dozen EU member-states with
controversial policies in place. But right now, the international online casinos
are still having a very real problem with bans and monopolies throughout
Scandinavia, some lasting blocks in Greece, and a handful of other problems.
The situation is slowly evolving but online casino gambling analysts predict
that only action from the European Court of Justice will actually firmly put a
stop to the illegal gambling monopolies. ECoJ action could take several years to
actually occur although the Commission has started the process with warnings and
referrals to the ECoJ for the particularly stubborn European nations. |
