Comes Down to Professional
The Danish courts and government are not backing down with the request earlier
this month that a professional poker player living in Denmark surrender all of
the funds that he as won from the game of online poker over the past year. The
Danish government has very controversial policies in place concerning the online
casino gambling industry and there has been a lot of speculation about just
where the legalities lie. Unlike many nations, Denmark has made internet
gambling illegal at the gamer level rather than just asking the online casinos
to stay out of the market. That means that Danish gamblers participating in the
game could risk loosing their winnings under certain circumstances.
The case in question indicates that professionally playing online casino poker
will not be tolerated by the Danish government. That seems to be the defining
line for the government right now. The Danish players can gamble at the internet
poker sites in moderation (at least until the government better blocks those
sites) but Danish citizens are not allowed to make a living from internet poker.
Once the gambler moves from casually playing the online casinos and internet
poker sites into a full-time, make a living job, the government is probably
going to come knocking on the player’s door looking for all of those winnings.
The recent case sees the Danish player owing the government a forfeiture of the
$28,000 in online poker funds that he won over the past year. The Supreme Court
of Denmark has also upheld this ruling – not entirely surprising considering the
Danish government’s attempts to continually operate a state monopoly and block
foreign casinos and gambling sites. |
