National Interest Considered
A couple of key phrases are being thrown around the South African government
these days where the online casino gambling issue is concerned. The government
has been in the process of building new legislation that would provide
comprehensive internet gambling regulation for the country. That has taken a lot
of months and the draft legislation has gone through many forms; now though all
of that work could be for naught. The latest indications for the industry are
less than desirable and the online casinos fear that regulating the South
African market could take even longer than initially planned since there has
been a bit of stalling lately from the politicians.
The two key phrases are “moral outrage” and “national interest.” Although the
legislation has been in the drafting and implementation process for many months
now there is only recently a loud outcry from some people about what precisely
the online casinos will bring to South Africa. The national interest has to be
considered and a lot of skeptics fear that there is no reason to legalize the
online casino sites, that would just encourage more gambling in the region and
possibly higher levels of problem gambling to crop up.
The moral outrage is coming more from a handful of politicians and citizens
rather than considering this opinion as a majority view. These two issues have
the power to put a cold stop to the implementation of online casino gambling and
analysts predict it could still be quite a bit of time before the South African
regulations pass. |
