Woerth's Online Casino Response
Eric Woerth, the Budget Minister in France, has come out strong against the
advertising efforts of Zeturf, an online casino gambling company based out of
Malta that has pushed the boundaries of legality recently. The 88th Prix de
l'Arc de Triomphe took place in France this month and the week preceding the
event Zeturf placed a full-page advert in the Metro, a free daily newspaper in
wide circulation throughout the country. Zeturf and the newspaper claim that the
advertisement was not directly for online casino gambling services. Woerth is
not so easily swayed and although the French government greatly disapproved of
this stunt, Woerth handled the situation with class. His key remark concerning
the Zeturf advert was to issue a gentle threat disguised as a reminder.
Woerth commented on the situation by reminding the online casino gambling
industry that advertising by gambling companies is not yet legal in France. Then
he took the situation just far enough to serve as a warning when he reminded the
industry that the French regulations are calling for a licensed gambling
industry. That means that any gambling company seeking a French gaming license
will have all past actions within the French market considered. The bottom line:
advertise in France and target French gamblers too soon and forever lost the
ability to obtain a French license and thus operate online casinos legally
within the country.
The new French online casino gambling regulations are set for voting in the
National Assembly this month and if they pass there is every anticipation that
they will take effect as soon as January 1, 2009; licensing would soon follow
the implementation of the regulations. |
