WAAG: Russia: Land Venues
Implementation of Russian legislation that banned land casinos and banished the
establishments to the far corners of Russia took effect in July 2009 and caused
quite a bit of a stir as the gambling companies forced out of the market are
quite fatalistic about their ability to stay afloat now that the approved
gambling regions are so far from the cities and metropolitan areas. A key
concern that is growing among the land gambling venues is the fear that illegal
online casino gambling in the country will replace any need for Russians to
travel the far distances required to visit the land venues.
Land gambling venues will take a hard hit to profit figures and that will also
reflect in the amount of money that the Russian government is able to receive in
tax revenue from the industry. Prior to the implementation of this new Russian
land gambling legislation the lance casinos were able to flourish in the
marketplace. In fact, land gambling was hugely profitable and a surprisingly
huge percentage of Russians participated in land gambling of some form or
another. And with extensive land gambling options the illegal online casino
gambling industry did not really have a viable market.
Interestingly, although many of the major land casino gambling venues heeded the
laws and shut their doors in July of this year, underground gambling
establishments have refused to comply with the new legislation and still operate
within elaborate underground networks. The local Russian police task forces are
currently working on identifying and eliminating these illegal land gambling
establishments…right now, the influx of illegal online gambling is a bit harder
to identify and curb at the local government level. |
