Fines Still a Threat
The Tennis Integrity Unit is currently investigating the WTA Tour tennis match
between Caroline Wozniacki and Anne Kremer because of rapid changes in betting
that took place while the game was happening and cost online casino bookmakers a
lot of money. The situation occurred because Wozniacki, the odds-on winner of
the match, was up on the first set in the match and part way through winning the
second set when her father was caught on international television telling her to
quite the game now in the hopes of not needlessly injuring her hamstring injury.
The comment rippled through the betting industry as punters used in-game betting
statistics at the online casinos and internet betting sites to alter their bets
to reflect Kremer as the likely winner.
Wozniacki heeded her father’s advice and dropped out of the match even though
she was the likely winner of the match. Her father noted that even though she
could press the injury and win the match she would be unable to compete in the
subsequent match so she should just forfeit the match. Punters who understood
the father’s in-game advice flocked to the online casinos and wagered huge sums
on Kremer, even though she was close to losing the match. The Tennis Integrity
Unit is now investigating the match to ensure that Wozniacki did not
purposefully throw the match for ulterior financial motives.
The Tennis Integrity Unit seems to share the same conclusion as the rest of the
world, including the online casino betting sites – it was just a tough break for
the companies. Wozniacki appears to have honestly made the decision to end the
match during the game. But the Tennis Integrity Unit has now noted that it may
still impose fines on Wozniacki for an apparent “lack of effort.” A move that
would certainly cause an uproar in the tennis industry as it would imply
Wozniacki should have instead played the game and risked injury. |
