What's It Going to Take
The United States has waffled on its stance on online casino gambling for about
three years now and there is a huge push from the internet gambling industry for
the US government to pass Barney Frank’s bill related to the licensing and
regulation of the gambling sites. The only problem is, right now the US
government has other things on its mind and major issues like healthcare reform
and the economy have been all the excuse the legislators have needed to push the
gambling issue to the bottom of the priority list. Chris Matthews made quite a
few friends in the online casino gambling industry this week with his appearance
on HBO’s Bill Maher show. He clearly outlined the steps, as he sees them, to a
legalized gambling industry.
Matthews highlighted the fact that the legalization of the online casinos is
just about as unpopular of an issue as gay rights in the military. Both of these
issues are pushed under the table and rarely openly talked about in Congress. To
change that takes some clear tactics and Matthews echoed Barney Frank’s
sentiments in noting that those who really want change in the US need to write a
letter to their local Congress. And that’s the key. A letter, not an email. The
key is not to rush to get the online casinos legalized – the bill could go to
Congress tomorrow if that was the main goal – but timing is more important.
Matthews and Frank both push that supporters of the online casino gambling
industry set the stage for internet gambling legislation by writing letters.
Matthews surmises with a thought on how Capitol Hill works, “it's old school,
it's formal, you write the letter." According to Matthews, and he does have the
clout and know-how about these things, Congressional representatives will
respond most effectively to a inundation of clear and precise letters asking for
the right to gambling online in the US. |
