Do We Need Protection
The online casino gambling industry has been essentially banned and blocked from
the United States market through the implementation and enforcement of the
UIGEA. The US government has pushed the issue of Americans needing protection at
the federal level to protect the morals of the country and to keep problem
gambling and other social ills associated with the online casinos out of the US
market. But on the other side of the situation are the protectionist US policies
that are keeping a contained internet gambling market in the US where only
certain types of online games are permitted.
The gamblers in the US though are begging the question, do we need that much
protection? The online casino gambling industry certainly needs regulations and
monitoring policies in place but how far should the government go in the land of
the free? One of the strongest counter arguments to the UIGEA is the fact that
it limits the personal freedoms of citizens and tells them just what they can
and cannot do at a federal level. It really wouldn’t be too far of a stretch to
say that the policies the US government has passed and enforced are blatantly
un-American.
What is the government protecting the US from? The UK market has a solid
gambling market where the online casinos are legal but extensively regulated and
watched…and it’s working extremely well. The US though is reticent to implement
these policies where the internet gambling sites would be licensed and regulated
within the market. Instead the UIGEA bans financial transactions but the people
of the US are still mostly legally able to gamble at offshore gaming sites if
they can find a site willing to have them. |
