Put the Onus on the Parents
If you tune into any debate where the online casino gambling industry is being
discussed you will hear a lot of the detractors of the industry arguing that the
gambling industry is compromising the youth of the world. Underage individuals
are accessing internet gambling sites and then developing negative gambling
habits and it just has to stop. This is a key argument for those who support
protectionist policies related to the online casinos. My question though is
simple, where are the parents is all of this? If the youth of America are
accessing the internet gambling sites then they’re doing it from somewhere that
has access to gambling sites – most likely their home computers.
Parents have a responsibility to their children to take proactive steps to make
the internet a safe place –that means using the appropriate software needed to
block questionable Web sites and making sure that they are monitoring internet
habits. Everyone all over the US gets all up in arms when the US government
begins to invade their personal lives with regulations and restrictions – but
why not take personally responsible for why the government is getting involved
in the first place. The online casino gambling detractors have a point when they
note that the youth of America have access to gambling sites and
advertisements…and it’s not entirely the fault of the gambling companies.
The internet is not a safe medium for children. There is a lot of good that
comes out of the internet and certainly children increasingly need to learn good
search and internet skills in this digital age, but internet use should be
monitored at the parental level, not just the federal government. Online casinos
should definitely not target underage gamblers, but the onus of protection
should really reside with the parents, the options are out there and they need
to do their research and actively safeguard their home computers. |
